The Wynoochee River
Every year, when the winter Steelhead season ends, we already pumped about next year, and this river is the reason why. The Wynoochee is tucked in the southern end of the Olympic Range in Washington State. It flows from the Olympic National Park 60 miles before flowing into the Chehalis River, then into Grays Harbor. This river gets over shadowed by other, more famous OP rivers, like the Hoh, and Sol Duc, which is fine by us. The floats are long, about 15 miles, so with the winter daylight available, we don’t have much time to swing flies. It’s all we can do to get in and out with enough light to see anyway, so we fish on the move with indicators.
Wynoochee River Winter Steelhead Fishing
Being located in the Olympic Rain Forest, get ready for moisture.
We can stress enough about using a top quality rain coat, as well as great quality base layer and thermal gear.
If you aren’t prepared here, it’s a long 15 miles before you get back to the heater in the truck.
But, as with all good things, you have to pay your dues.
This is trophy Steelhead water.
Each year we boat multiple fish in the 18-20lb range.
Combined with the rain forest back drop, this is truly an amazing river to fish, and we’re very lucky to have it within 2-1/2 hours from Portland.
