    The Kalama River

    Kalama River Fly Fishing

The Kalama is just 45 minutes north of Portland In Washington State. This little has legendary roots and has been fished by some true pioneers of the sport. It comes off Mount St. Helens and travels 45 miles before entering the Columbia near the town of Kalama. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up in numbers. Spring and Fall Chinook, Fall Coho and year around steelhead runs, the Kalama has become a favorite of many anglers living in the Portland metro area and out of town visitors. The little river that could, as we call it, has tons of variety, no matter what time of year you hit it.

Kalama River Coho Fly Fishing Trip

Summer steelhead run 6-12 lbs, while the Winter Steelhead run tend to make it in a little better fed, averaging 10-16lbs, with 18-20lb fish around.

Spring Chinook are by far the hardest species in the river to hook on a fly, but well worth it the effort if you can get into one.

They run 12-20lbs and are some of the best eating fish to be found anywhere.

Fall coho are quickly becoming a high demand fishery.

Think Brown Trout Streamer fishing for Pacific Salmon.

Often times you can watch them follow your fly clear to the boat before they take it.
