    The Deschutes River

    Deschutes River Fly Fishing

The Deschutes is Oregon’s premier blue ribbon Trout and Summer Steelhead River. Starting on the east side of the Cascade Range near LaPine, the Deschutes travels over 250 miles before it dumps into the Columbia River near The Dalles. While the upper river has it’s own unique fishery for Browns, Rainbows, and Brook Trout, the lower 100 miles below Lake Billy Chinook is where the river earned it’s fly fishing reputation for it’s world famous Redband Trout and Summer Run Steelhead, and is where we focus all of our guided trips on the river.

With over 2500 Trout per mile of some of the hardest fighting fish to be found on the entire west coast, the Deschutes has earned it’s spot as one of the great western trout rivers. Flowing through Oregon’s high desert, the Deschutes is as rugged, wild, and beautiful as it was 100 years ago, and once you drop in the canyon, it’s easy to forget what century you’re living in.

Averaging 5000 CFS at a speed of 11 MPH, she’s a big girl and can be very intimidating for someone not familiar with fishing a river of this size, and as with any river, there are good spots and bad spots to consistently get into fish, and those spots will change from season to season. Going with someone who knows the river can be the difference between a finding a couple fish or having the trip of a lifetime.

    Deschutes Summer Steelhead

Simply put, The Deschutes was made for the Spey Rod, and more so, a floating line spey anglers dream come true. The amount of rivers where Steelhead consistently come up to a floating line are few and far between, making them a truly special place in the heart of Steelheading as a whole. The Deschutes is one of those special places. From late June through November, summer Steelhead are available to the fly angler. The highlight times are mid August – October, with 90% of that time floating line fishing with traditional patterns.

For your guided trip, plan on a long day. We will start before the sun comes up, pulling into the first spot and getting into position, ready for that first cast as the daylight starts peeking its way over the canyon walls. Usually once you can see the tip of your rod, you can start your day fishing. Once the canyon gets too bright and heats up, we will break for a few hours, eat and take a river nap. Feeling refreshed after your snooze, and when the sun is out of the fishes eyes, you’ll continue fishing until dark. Fishing these long days gets you to best chance to hook a steelhead on the fly rod.  Steelhead hate sun, and rarely come up to the swung fly with the sun in their eyes.

In the fall months, when the sun is lower, days are cooler and shorter, we will fish a full day without an extended break.
