The Cowlitz River
The Cowlitz has one of the biggest drainage basins in the State of Washington, spanning over 2500 sq miles. Feeding From Mount Raineer, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams, she carries a lot of water. Another perfect spey rod river, we are very picky on when we fish this system. The water levels have to be right to have the best chance of success on the fly rod. Typically we fish this river when it’s at it’s lowest, in August and September. When the river gets high, it get very fast, making it very hard to find good holding water suitable for spey rods.
Cowlitz River Summer Steelhead & Sea Run Cutthroat Trout Fishing
Historically the Cowlitz has one of the biggest summer Steelhead returns in the entire State of Washington.
It’s not uncommon to have over 10,000 Steelhead return once the finally tally is in.
Along with the numbers, comes the crowds, so we don’t guide here on the weekends.
The weekdays are much more relaxed and often times we’ll have the whole place to ourselves, especially when the Columbia opens for Fall Chinook.
The Cowlitz also has a Sea Run Cutthroat Trout program that we fish in the fall.
These guys run 14″-18″ and fight with all the power of the ocean.
They are perfect for Trout Spey opportunities and will put a big bend in a little 3 weight micro spey.
