The Clackamas River
The Clackamas begins near Olallie Butte, between Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. It falls 4900 feet in 83 miles before entering the Willamette River near Gladstone Oregon. The Clackamas is considered a Valley stream, short for Willamette Valley. As most Valley streams, it host both Summer and Winter Run Steelhead. Within an hour of Portland, it’s called home river for a lot of area anglers, and for good reason. There’s rarely a day when the Clack doesn’t have a few good fishable runs. It’s one of the few rivers in the US that has a wide flood plain, meaning in high water events, the river spreads out wide, rather than turning deep and fast. For this reason, it’s favored by spey anglers. Even in high water, we still have beautiful inside seams and edges that hold fish and are very easy to fish effectively.
Clackamas River Steelhead Fishing
We fish the Clackamas year round for Steelhead, with Winter and Spring being the highlight.
From November thru June the river is at it’s best.
The water is at premium levels and clarity, and the fish are in good supply.
The Fish range from 8 – 12lbs, with a few over 15lbs hooked fairly often.
Being bigger and wider than the Sandy, it’s not as hard to find good water on busy days.
We fish Skagit heads and sink tips with a huge variety of flies, depending on water levels and time of year.
